Bright light in the darkness, as if the copper’s spotlight from the other night has returned, and it carves out a scene in the pupil of this dead galah—

A Triton bundling down a lonesome road. On the way to Nullagine. The Black Range south of town, unknowable scorched hills falling away in quiet splendour.

The ute finally rattles to a halt in the gravel. The driver – none of his good humour and kindness on show. Sweat budded across his face like his skin is chill glass just removed from the fridge.

He steps from the Triton and fetches a large, crackly plastic bag. As he yanks it from the back seat, it sags heavily. Those scaly hands, hewn from hard work, clench the lip of the bag and Glen faces the Black Range. Situated here, quiet and staring, he appears darkly oracular, just him and the unknowable hills.

He walks straight out between the corkwoods, swinging the black plastic bag at his side, waving the flies on when they make a pass at his eyes. He walks for a solid couple of k’s before he comes across a gully. He upturns the plastic bag and a decapitated head and two hands, lopped off at the wrists, tumble out.

A face filmed with dust after rolling into the gully.

‘Nothin’ personal, Shrubby,’ Glen says.
